Oh yeah, I’ve thought this myself about that person multiple times. In addition, giving your character one *~*~superuneek~*~* trait—be it species, personality, whatever—doesn’t automatically make it a good character. A good character is more than just a collection of features.

So, having an overweight character? A character that is not a sparkledog? A character that’s unattractive? Doesn’t automatically make it creative.

Seriously, taking a common feature and just doing the opposite is not… you know, the beacon of originality or something. Get over yourself.

Mostly this was about the ‘hey look look at me my characters are not doges look’ sort of superiority which also manifested in the ‘no one will draw characters as unique as mine’ rants, if I’m to be completely frank.

I’ve always figured a collection of traits and personality words isn’t enough to make a character; it’s interactions with others and context and the person as whole (which is also why roleplay is so good for development) so Lije Baley can be a grouchy loner detective and House can be a grouchy loner detective and they can still be distinct and different. And Scout Finch and Liesel Meminger are literally just little girls (so boring and pedestrian). And Atticus Finch is extremely intelligent, good with guns, generous and genuinely good (god it’s like they just stuffed all the characteristics of a ‘good person’ into one character how could they think that would work).

You can’t simplify a character down to a bunch of sentences and evenifthe character in question is really terribly cliche, that’s how one learns: through the doing of it, the writing and thinking process.

Also I found it mildly hypocritical to cry ‘hey I’m just trying to have fun petsites aren’t serious’ when the people making their own characters are probablyalsojust trying to have fun. Most writers don’t create characters with the goal of personally offending someone else in mind?

well, i complain that people don’t draw my characters with their unique traits because they DON’T. I get commissions back all the time where my buff girls are waifed up, my chubsters are drawn as supermodels, and where square jawlines are mysteriously softened. And often I just get turned down right up front because the artist will literally tell me it’s “too hard” to draw my simple-as-hell characters because they don’t stick to the “acceptable hot” template. Hell yeah I’m going to rant about it, because it’s FRUSTRATING. I love collecting art of my characters and I want to see them in different styles—-but I DON’T want to see anime pinups wearing their clothes. It’s as wrong to me as it would be if someone commissioned art of their smooth skinned long haired bishie and got back a hairy fat neckbeard guy wearing his clothes.

and yeah, of course how the story is actually written is what makes a character. I have always been of the opinion that it all depends on how you write a character. HOWEVER, character profiles DO show how you write a character; when you constantly gush about how sexy and powerful your character is in your character profile (which is supposed to provide relatively objective information about a character) and about how his ruff past excuses all his informed-trait-flaws, I seriously doubt there’s anything the writer can do to write themself out of that kind of hole in a roleplay.

a lot of rpers roleplay just for fun, but there are also a lot of them who take it DEAD FUCKING SERIOUSLY and then get a big head and think they’re god’s gift to making OCs because their rp partner loves their sexy inuyasha recolor and then just implodes in a fantastic mess when they find out otherwise. those are usually the people i scoff at. if someone says “hey, i just have my hot anime guy for hot anime guy rps because it’s fun” then i usually don’t have a bone to pick with them. But when they prance in acting like they’ve written the generic bishie to end all generic bishies or honk about how their massive gary stu is a well balanced character, that’s when we got a problem.
